Test Order Mnemonic: HGBF

Applies To: Quantitative measurement of Hemoglobin F

Request Form: Hematology B

Patient Preparation: If patient is to receive RBC transfusion, collect before transfusion.

Collection: Routine venipuncture

Storage Instructions: If not transported to lab 0-2 hours after collection, store in refrigerator.

Causes for Rejection: Collected in wrong tube, clotted, identification error.

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at Sample Management, 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 24-48 hours; Monday-Friday.

Specimen: Blood

Minimum Volume: Pediatric: 1-3 ml; Adults: 5-10 ml

Container: Heparin (Green-top tube) preferred; EDTA (Lavender-top tube) accepted.

Reference Ranges:  ≤1.5%

Test Method: Alkali denaturation, HPLC

Interfering Substances: Clotted specimen, transfusion
