Test Order Mnemonic: G6PDASSY

Applies To: Quantitative analysis measuring level of G6PD activity in RBC; patients deficient are susceptible to hemolytic crises when exposed to certain drugs/medications.

Lab: Hematopathology

Request Form: Hematology B

Specimen: Blood

Minimum Volume: 3 ml

Container: Heparin (Green-top tube)

Patient Preparation: If patient is to receive RBC transfusion, collect before transfusion.  Transport to lab on ice

within 30 minutes.

Collection: Routine venipuncture.  Transport immediately on ice.

Storage Instructions: Store in refrigerator or on ice.

Special Instructions: Transport to lab on ice within 30 minutes of collection. 

Cause For Rejection: Clotted, collected in wrong tube, improperly stored and/or transported, identification error.

Availability: Samples will be accepted Monday-Friday, 8AM - 3PM in Sample Management, 5.136 McCullough. 

Turnaround Time: Weekdays (received before 3 PM) - 1 hour

Reference Ranges: 3.0-6.0 mg/min/g Hgb

Test Method: Photometric

Interfering Substances: Transfusions, clotted specimen, improper transportation (See Special Instructions)
