Test Order Mnemonic: G6PDSCR

Applies To: Screening test for detecting G6PD Deficiency.

Lab: Hematopathology

Request Form: Hematology B

Specimen: Blood

Container: EDTA (Lavender top tube) or Heparin (Green top tube) accepted.  Newborns - PKU card.

Min Volume: Adults: 3 mL blood; Newborns: PKU card (2 circles)

Patient Preparation: If patient is to receive RBC transfusion, collect before transfusion.

Collection: Routine venipuncture.  Transport to lab within 30 minutes.

Storage Instructions: Store in refrigerator.

Special Instructions: Pediatric patients: Follow instructions on PKU cards; Adults: Transport to lab within 30 minutes of collection.

Cause For Rejection: Clotted, collected in wrong tube, improperly stored and/or transported, identification error.

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at Sample Management, 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: 24 hours, Monday - Friday

Reference Range: Normal = normal G6PD activity; no evidence of deficiency.  Borderline = may indicate G6PD deficiency, recommend confirmation with quantitative assay.  Deficient = markedly G6PD activity; consistent with G6PD deficiency, recommend confirmation with quantitative assay.

Critical Values: Deficient

Test Method: Spot Fluorescence

Interfering Substances: Transfusions, clotted specimen, improper transportation (See Special Instructions).
