Clinical Indication:

CSF or serous cavity trauma or hemorrhage

Methodology:

Critspin Manual Hematocrit

Performed:

 Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at Sample Management, 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time:

 STAT: 1 hour; Routine: 4 hours [NOTE: Fluids must be received within one hour of collection for STAT processing.]

Specimen Requirements:

Collect: Routine collection by physician in EDTA (lavender-top tube)

Specimen: Pleural, peritoneal, pericardial, CSF

Volume: Lavender Tube 4.0 ml or volume stated on collection tube.  Microtainer 250 u/L

Minimum Volume: 90% of  Stated tube volume

Storage/Transport:  Room Temperature 4 hours .  If testing cannot be completed  with in 4 hours sample should be refrigerated.

Stability: Stable Refrigerated for 36 hours.

Causes for Rejection: QNS, clotted, old specimen, identification error

Clinical Information:

If applicable, state clinical information that is required to be provided with specimen.

Reference Range:

By report (reports may vary based on instrumentation, patient age and sex)

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
