PLATELET AGGREGATION (089-0469)

CPT 4 Code:  85576

Test Order Mnemonic: PLATAG

Test Includes: (1) Aggregation responses to Arachidonic acid, ADP, Collagen, Epinephrine, and Ristocetin at various concentrations; (2) Interpretation of responses by Hematopathologist.

Request Form: Hematology A; must have consultation request.

Lab: Hematopathology

Patient Preparation: Prior to drawing sample, patient must be fasting (8 hours) and must not have taken aspirin or aspirin-like drugs (7-10 days). May be invalid if patient has thrombocytopenia.

Collection: Special tubes must be obtained from the lab. Sample should be drawn without trauma using a two-syringe method.

Causes for Rejection: QNS, clotted, improperly collected sample.

Availability: Must be scheduled with laboratory. Hematopathology, Room 5.142, McCullough.

Turnaround Time: 4 hours

Special Instructions: Test must be scheduled with the lab. Control must be furnished with patient’s blood. Contact laboratory (409-772-3318) for detailed instructions.

Specimen: Blood

Volume: 30 ml preferred; 20 ml blood (minimum)

Container: Special tubes prepared by lab: 15 ml conical centrifuge tube with 1.0 ml sodium citrate

Test Method: Photo-Optical Detection

Interfering Substances: Aspirin or aspirin containing products, wine, or other drugs known to contain platelet function inhibitors ingested within 7-10 days of procedure.
