Test Includes: Isolation and identification of anaerobic bacteria

Request Form: Microbiology

Collection: Aseptic technique. Place the aspirate, drainage, or tissue in a gel-containing "Anaerobic Transport" tube, or sterile cup.

Storage Instructions: Room temperature

Causes for Rejection: Improper specimen source, including mouth, throat, nasal, nasopharyngeal, sputum, ear, eye, bronchial washings, gastric washings, urine (midstream or catheter), vaginal, cervical, prostatic secretions, feces, ileostomy, colostomy, fistulas, decubitus ulcers, superficial wounds, catheter tips, Bartholin cyst, perirectal abscess, perineal, and pilonidal cysts,  joint fluid bronchial brush; improper collection used. Specimen on swabs.

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Preliminary report after 2 days; final report after 2-6 days

Special Instructions: Use the anaerobic transport systems.

Specimen: Aspirates, abscesses, cellulitis, cysts, gall bladder, bile, IUD, maxillary sinus, placenta tissues, uterine, endometrial, protected bronchial brush, bronchoalveolar lavage, bladder and kidney urine, body fluids, deep wound drainage, CSF and tissues

Volume: 2 mL

Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL
