Test Order Mnemonic: C BLDN

Lab: Bacteriology

Request Form: Microbiology

Collection: Collect the specimen in the same manner as for a routine blood culture using only the aerobic vial. Follow instructions in the Medi-flex kit. Withdraw 8-10 mL of blood with a syringe and inject into an alcohol-cleaned Bactec aerobic vial.

Storage Instructions: Room temperature. Do not refrigerate

Causes for Rejection: Improper collection

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Preliminary report after 1 day, final report after 21 days

Special Instructions: Indicate on the requisition that Brucella is suspected so the laboratory will incubate this culture for 21 days. When submitting samples other than blood in a blood culture bottle, indicate so on the requisition slip.

Specimen: Blood (other acceptable samples are bone marrow or tissues)

Volume: 10 ml

Minimum Volume: 8 ml

Container: Bactec blood vial, available through Materials Management

Critical Values: Culture positive
