FECES CULTURE (088-0507, 088-0518x2)

Clinical Indication:

Diarrhea caused by bacterial intestinal pathogens.

Test Mnemonic: C FECES
Methodology: Culture for the isolation of Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter  and E. coli 0157:H7 species
Performed:

 Clinical Microbiology

Turnaround Time:

2-3 days

Specimen Requirements:

Collect: Culturette or feces sample

Specimen Preparation: Clean container or Culturette

Storage/Transport:  Refrigerate

Stability: 48 hours

Causes for Rejection:  Leaking container, specimens contaminated with urine or water, duplicate specimens within 24 hours from same source, specimens from patients hospitalized for more than three days, specimens received in preservatives

Clinical Information:  Indicate requests for culture of organisms other than those listed above. Vibrio, Yersinia, and enterohemorragic E. coli requests are processed separately.
Reference Range:

No Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter or E.coli 0157:H7 isolated

Note:

 Culture is performed by special request only for patients who developed diarrhea after hospitalized of more than 3 days, since these pathogens are rarely hospital acquired

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
