Test Order Mnemonic: F FUN

Applies To: Isolation and identification of yeast and moulds in lower respiratory specimens.

Lab: Mycology

Request Form: Microbiology

Collection: Induced sputum, expectorated sputum, bronchoscopy

Storage Instructions: Store at 2-8°C, transport to laboratory as soon as possible

Causes for Rejection: Submission of more than one sputum specimen within 24 hours

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Cultures are held for 4 weeks

Special Instructions: Early AM sputum samples are recommended. A maximum of 3 sputum samples collected on 3 separate days will be accepted for culture. Antifungal susceptibility testing is performed only with approval.

Specimen: Sputum, induced or expectorated, bronchial washings, bronchial lavage, tracheal aspirates

Minimum Volume: 3 ml

Container: Sterile cup, Lukens tube
