Collection: Use a sterile scalpel to scrape skin lesions. Collect hair and base of hair roots for scalp shavings. Collect nail scrapings and material from nail bed. Place scrapings or nails in a sealed, clean container.

Storage Instructions: Room temperature. Do not refrigerate.

Causes for Rejection: Swabs.

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Cultures are held for 3 weeks

Specimen: Skin scrapings, scalp scrapings, nail scrapings, skin, hair, hair follicles

Volume: 10-15 hairs for scalp, more than 0.5 grams of scrapings
