CPT 4 Code: 87070

Test Order Mnemonic: C GEN

Applies To: Isolation of aerobic bacteria, including Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Group B Beta hemolytic Streptococcus.

Lab: Bacteriology

Request Form: Microbiology

Collection: Aseptic technique, collect swab of purulent material

Storage Instructions: Room temperature

Causes for Rejection: Unlabeled specimen

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Preliminary after 1 day, final after 2-3 days

Special Instructions: For detection of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the GC GenProbe test is recommended (refer to GC Probe test). If Group B Streptococcus is the only bacteria this order reflects, request C GBS (Group B Strep screen). This laboratory does not routinely culture for Gardnerella vaginalis or Haemophilus ducreyi.
