Synonyms: Direct Gram Stain

CPT 4 Code: 87205

Test Order Mnemonic: C GS (Use if only a gram stain is only test --no bacterial culture) or if ordering STAT or not part of a usual test.

Request Form: Microbiology

Collection: Aseptic technique, collect appropriate sample

Storage Instructions: Source dependent

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 4 hours; STAT: 1 hour from receipt of the specimen in the laboratory

Special Instructions: A direct gram stain is routinely performed on specimens from  most body sites if two swabs are submitted or if fluid, aspirate or tissue is submitted. Order a gram stain separately when it is needed STAT or from urine, feces (order fecal leukocyte), or other source that does not routinely include a gram stain. Call Microbiology laboratory with questions.
