GROUP B STREPTOCOCCUS Culture: (088-0008)

Clinical Indication:

 Screening culture for the presence of Group B Streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae) in pregnant women prior to delivery.

Test Mnemonic:

Methodology:

Culture with enriched broth for recovery of the organism

Performed:

 Clinical Microbiology

Turnaround Time:

 2-4 days

Specimen Requirements: Patient Preparation: Vaginal, anal-rectal specimen

Collect: Collect swab of a specimen from vaginal introitus and anorectum. Cervical specimens are not recommended.

Specimen Preparation: Dual swab Culturette

Storage/Transport: Room temperature, refrigerate if transport is delayed

Stability: 48 hours

Causes for Rejection: Improper collection, swabs received more than 72 hours after collection

Clinical Information:

Please note if patient is allergic to Penicillin on the request form. If stated and the culture is positive, additional antibiotic susceptibility tests will be performed.

Reference Range:

No Group B Strep isolated

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
