HEPATITIS A VIRUS ANTIBODY (Total) (088-7174)

Test Order Mnemonic: HAV

Applies to: Hepatitis A virus antibody to determine immune status

Lab: Serology

Request Form: Microbiology/Serology

Collection: Routine venipuncture, SST (serum separator tube)

Storage Instructions: Centrifuge the specimen and store at 2-8°C.

Causes for Rejection: Gross hemolysis, specimens containing particulate matter, specimens containing sodium azide, heat-inactivated specimens

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at Sample Management, 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: 24 - 72 hours

Special Instructions: This test detects both IgG & IgM to HAV. This test is used to determine immune status only. Previously positive patients do not require repeat testing. If the patient has no detectable antibody, it is recommended to wait at least three months before testing again. Tests on samples collected less than three months from the initial negative results will be cancelled, unless approved by a Microbiology Director or their designee.
