Test Includes:

Shell vial assays to isolate Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 and varicella zoster virus

Collection:

Aspirate fluid from fresh vesicle with a syringe, when possible; then, using a culturette (flocked swab), swab the base of the vesicle. Inoculate the viral transport medium with both the swab and the fluid.

 Refrigerate

Causes for Rejection:

Improper collection, delayed transport, transport at room temperature

Availability:

Samples are accepted 24 hours a day at Microbiology Processing Laboratory- Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time:

Test is performed Monday- Friday

Transport on ice, as soon as possible
