Shell vial assay to isolate and identify Herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2

Collection:

Aspirate fluid from fresh vesicle when possible, then with a culturette, swab the base of the vesicle. Inoculate the viral transport medium with both the swab and fluid. Use a flocked swab whenever possible.

Storage Instructions: 

 Store VTM (Viral transport medium) refrigerated

Causes for Rejection:

Improper collection; delayed transport, transport at room temperature

Availability:

Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Laboratory - Room 5.137 McCullough

Turnaround Time:

2-3 days; test performed Monday - Friday

Special Instructions:

Transport samples on ice as soon after collection as possible.

Oral, genital lesions, anal, newborn screening
