INFLUENZA A VIRUS, DIRECT (088-0075)

CPT 4 Code: 87804 (EIA)

Test Order Mnemonic:  V FUAB (INFLU A AND B, BY EIA)

Test Includes:  EIA capture-membrane assay for the detection of Influenza A virus, usually ordered with other seasonal viruses.

Lab: Virology

Request Form: Microbiology

Collection: Use sterile saline  to aspirate a nasal wash. With a rubber bulb, insert 5 ml of saline into the patient's nostril. Immediately aspirate the saline back into the bulb. Transfer the contents of the bulb to an empty test tube and label.

Storage Instructions: Refrigerate; transport on ice.

Causes for Rejection:  Insufficient cellular material, broken or leaking container

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: 1 day; test performed daily Sunday - Friday

Special Instructions: Transport VTM  on ice. Specify viruses suspected. Instructions and materials are available from the Microbiology Laboratory,  Receiving 5.137 McCullough. The EIA test is performed seasonally when high likely of disease is in the community - winter. Negative tests may be reflexed to a shell vial culture or PCR assay for detection of respiratory viruses.Refer to PCR test for more details.

 Specimen: Nasal wash, nasal swab, throat

Minimum Volume: 2 ml

Other Information: Order PCR test in addition to this direct test.
