 Diagnosis of pneumonia caused by Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1.

 Clinical Microbiology

 Test performed daily

Collect: Urine (clean catch). First morning specimen is recommended

Specimen Preparation: Sterile, leak-proof container.

Storage/Transport: Refrigerate

Stability: 14 days refrigerated

Causes for Rejection:  Leaking container, insufficient volume, specimens other than urine, more than one specimen submitted.

A culture or PCR of respiratory sources should also be performed, since a negative result does not rule out infection with Legionella and false positives can occur.
