Test includes: Isolation and presumptive identification of Legionella bacteria.

Laboratory: Bacteriology

Request Form: Microbiology

Collection: Bronchoscopy, aspiration, or surgical collection of specimens; sputum.

Storage instructions: Refrigerate; transport as soon as possible.

Causes for rejection: Leaking container, insufficient volume of fluid specimen; incorrect specimen.

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Final report after 10 days.

Specimen: Sputum (expectorated or induced), respiratory aspirates (nasotracheal, endotracheal, transtracheal, percutaneous lung, endobronchial); bronchial washings, BAL, bronchial brushings, bronchial biopsy; other biopsy material (open lung, transbronchial); pericardial, peritoneal or pleural fluid; lung tissue obtained at autopsy.

Minimum volume: 1 ml

Container: Sterile, leak-proof container.
