Applies to: Examination of feces to detect Microsporidia spp.

Lab: Parasitology

Request Form: Microbiology

Collection: Collect fecal specimen or duodenal aspirate and place in preservative (Parapak).

Patient Preparation: Patient should be cautioned against the use of antacids, barium sulfate, bismuth compounds, anti-diarrheal medications, oily laxatives, or radiologic bronchogram contrast medium.

Storage Instructions: Store Parapak at room temperature. Store unpreserved feces at 2-8°C.

Causes for Rejection: Insufficient specimen, leaking container, unpreserved specimens submitted more than 24 hours after collection, duplicate specimens from the same source within 24 hours, interfering agents such as antacid, barium, bismuth compounds,oil, contrast medium.

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: 1 day; test performed Monday-Friday

Special Instructions: Note request for this intestinal parasite on request. This parasite may not be detected in a routine ova and parasite exam.

Specimen: Feces, duodenal aspirate

Container: Parapak available through Materials Management.

Minimum Volume: 1 ml
