Request Form: Microbiology

Collection: Place specimen in a small (<1 ml) amount of sterile saline.

Storage Instructions: Store at room temperature. Transport to the laboratory as soon as possible. If transport is delayed, add 1-2 ml of 10% Formalin to the specimen as a preservative.

Causes for Rejection: Insufficient quantity, specimen submitted more than 24 hours after collection

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: 2 days; test performed Monday-Friday

Special Instructions: Make note of the addition of Formalin on the outside of the container.

Specimen: Fine needle aspirate, aspirates of cysts or abscesses

Minimum Volume: 1 ml

Container: Clean, leak-proof container
