Test Includes: Direct and concentrated wet mount examinations

Applies To: Intestinal protozoa and intestinal helminths

Request Form: Microbiology

Patient Preparation: Have patient gargle with mouthwash before collection of expectorated, deep cough sputum.

Storage Instructions: Room temperature. Transport to the laboratory as soon as possible.

Causes for Rejection: Submission of specimens collected more than 24 hours earlier

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: 1 day; test performed Monday-Friday

Special Instructions: If exam for Cryptosporidium is requested, refer to Cryptospordium

Specimen: Expectorated sputum

Minimum Volume: 1 ml

Container: Clean, leak-proof container
