Test Order Mnemonic: O OP

Synonyms: Amoeba, Giardia Test, O and P, Parasite Exam

Test Includes: Wet mount from concentrated specimen and Trichrome stained smear

Applies To: Intestinal Protozoa and intestinal Helminths

Request Form: Microbiology

Patient Preparation: Caution patient against the use of antacids, barium sulfate, bismuth compounds, anti-diarrheal medications, oily laxatives, or radiologic contrast medium.

Collection: To assure recovery of parasitic elements, collect three specimens on alternating days. For hospitalized patients, it is suggested to specimens be collected every 24-hours for 3 days.  Collect random feces specimen and place in preservative Parapak.

Storage Instructions: Store Parapak at room temperature. Store unpreserved samples at 2-8°C.

Causes for Rejection: The presence of interfering substances such as antacids, barium bismuth, drugs, oil, and urine; unpreserved specimens submitted more than 24 hours after collection; duplicate specimens from the same source within 24 hours

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: 2 days; test performed Monday-Friday

Special Instructions: Submit the unrefrigerated specimen within 30 minutes of collection (sample is observed immediately for parasite motility). Routine O&P may not detect Microspordia, Cryptosporidia or Cyclospora. Request these examinations specifically. Include clinical information and travel history if available.
