RESPIRATORY SYNCYTIAL VIRUS, DIRECT (088-0074, 088-0517) Synonyms: RSV Direct, RSV EIA, RSV DFA CPT4 Code: 87280 (DFA), 87420 (EIA) Test Order Mnemonic: V RSD, V RSE Applies to: The DFA test demonstrates the viral antigen by fluorescent antibody staining. The EIA test is an enzyme immunoassay where viral antigens are captured on a membrane and reaction is visible by color change. Lab: Virology Request Form: Microbiology Collection: Use Sterile saline (PBS) to aspirate a nasal wash. With a rubber bulb, insert 5 ml of PBS into the patient's nostril. Immediately aspirate the PBS back into the bulb. Transfer the contents of the bulb to an empty test tube and label. Storage Instructions: Refrigerate. Transport on ice. Causes for Rejection: Specimen not transported on ice, insufficient cellular material, frozen samples Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough. Turnaround Time: 1 day; STAT 2 hours Special Instructions: Transport on ice. Instructions and materials are available from Virology, Room 5.110, McCullough Building, Monday-Friday, 8 AM-4 PM and Sunday, 8 AM-3: 30 PM. Other information: The DFA and EIA tests are available during the viral respiratory season (usually November through April). The DFA test is performed once per day. The virology laboratory will perform the appropriate test unless a specific request is received. A RSV culture is performed on samples with a negative direct result. Specimen: Nasal wash. nasopharyngeal swab, nasal asperate, BAL Nasal wash and NP swab/asperate are most appropriate since this is where the highest titers of virus are contained. Minimum Volume: 3 ml Container: Test tube with screw cap Test Method: FA stain and EIA membrane assay. Revised 07/25/2008 by T. Friloux |
