Test Includes: A gram stain to screen for adequacy of specimen, identification of pathogenic organisms and antimicrobial susceptibility testing when appropriate

Request Form: Microbiology

Collection: Induced or expectorated sputum in a sterile container. Early AM collected specimens are recommended.

Storage Instructions: Refrigerate.

Causes for Rejection: Leaking container, more than one specimen submitted within a 72-hour time, specimen contaminated with upper respiratory tract secretions.

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Preliminary report after 1 day, final report after 3 days
