tRICHOMONAS WET PREP EXAMINATION: (088-0091)

Clinical Indication:

Vaginal discharge, urethral discharge, or penile discharge due to infections by yeast, Trichomonas vaginalis or Gardernella vaginalis

 1 hour

Specimen Requirements: Patient Preparation: Vaginal or urethra discharge and scrapings

Collect:  Collect specimen with Culturette swab. Place swab in a tube with a small amount of saline (1.0 ml).

Specimen Preparation: Sterile tube with a small amount of normal saline

Storage/Transport: Room temperature

Stability: 2 hours

Causes for Rejection: Dry swab, refrigerated specimen, specimen received > 2 hour after collection.

Negative

Note: Trichomonas vaginalis quickly loses motility so samples need to observed within 2 hours of collection to optimally identify this organism.

Report includes presence or absence of Trichomonas vaginalis, yeast, hyphae, "Clue cells" and white blood cells.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
