TRICHOMONAS EXAM (088-0091)

Synonyms: Wet Prep for Trichomonas, Trichomonas culture

Test Order Mnemonic: O TRI (Examine for Trichomonas vaginalis only), O WET (examine for Trichomonas, yeast and cellular elements)

Applies To: Trichomonas vaginalis

Request Form: Microbiology

Collection: For genital sources, collect specimen with swab. Place specimens in a tube with a small amount of saline (<1.0 ml). If specimen(s) will not be delivered to the laboratory within one hour from collection, it is recommended the specimen be placed in an InPouch IV container to preserve any Trichomonas present. Samples collected using the InPouch IV container are observed for several days to detect the presence of Trichomonas vaginalis.

Storage Instructions: Room temperature. Transport to laboratory within 1 hour of collection.

Causes for Rejection: Dry swab, refrigerated specimen, specimen received > 2 hour after collection.

Special Instructions: Do not refrigerate.

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: 1 day, 5 days for samples in InPouch IV container

Special Instructions: Do not refrigerate.

Specimen: Vaginal discharge, urethral discharge, penile discharge, urethral mucosa scraping

Minimum Volume: 0.5 ml

Container: Clean, leak-proof container

Test Method: microscopic exam; culture.
