Test Includes: Colony count and isolation of aerobic bacteria, including identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing when appropriate

Collection: Follow instructions in the urine collection kit. Transfer urine to grey-top vacutainer tube included in the collection kit.

Storage Instructions: Refrigerate

Causes for Rejection: Prolonged transport time, specimen received in a non-sterile container, leaking container, more than one sample received within 48 hours., samples without preservatives received 2 hours after collection. Submission of potassium lithium tubes (also gray topped)

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Preliminary report after 1 day, final report after 2-3 days

Special Instructions: Gram stains are not routinely performed, order as a separate test if needed. Please specify if sample is from a suprapubic collection so that special processing procedures are used.

Specimen: Urine - clean catch collection, catheterized collection, suprapubic collection

Volume: 2 ml

Minimum Volume: 1 ml

Container: Vacutainer, grey- top (part of the urine collection kit)
