Collection: Follow specimen collection kit instructions. Collect the specimen from the base of the vesicular lesion, obtaining epithelial cells for examination.

Storage Instructions: Room temperature

Causes for Rejection: Broken slide, improper collection, insufficient cellular material

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: 1 day; test performed Sunday - Friday

Special Instructions: Deliver specimen by noon for same day results. A VZV culture is recommended since a negative direct test does not rule out active VZV infection.

Specimen: Air-dried, fixed slide with epithelial cells from vesicular lesions

Container: Collection kits are available from Microbiology Receiving, Room 5.137 McCullough.
