VARICELLA ZOSTER VIRUS CULTURE (088-0082)

Synonyms: VZV Culture, VZV Screen

Test Order Mnemonic: V VZV

Test Includes: Shell vial assay and conventional virus culture to isolate Herpes varicella and Herpes zoster viruses

Lab: Virology

Request Form: Microbiology

Collection: Aspirate fluid from fresh vesicle when possible; then, using a culturette, swab the base of the vesicle. Inoculate the viral transport medium with both the swab and fluid.

Storage Instructions: Refrigerate; transport on ice ASAP.

Causes for Rejection: Improper collection, delayed transport, transport at room temperature

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Shell vial assay - 2 days; cultures are held 3 weeks

Special Instructions: Varicella Zoster Direct Test is also recommended. Transport on ice. Viral transport media is available from Microbiology Receiving, Room 5.137 McCullough.
