Test Order Mnemonic: V VIRUS

Applies to: Isolation and identification of viruses from patient samples using specific media for appropriate or suspected viruses.

Lab: Virology

Request Form: Microbiology

Collection: Viral transport media is available from Microbiology Receiving, Room 5.137 McCullough

Storage Instructions: Refrigerate or hold on ice; transport all samples on ice except blood (transport at room temperature)

Causes for Rejection: Improper collection, delayed transport, transport at room temperature, frozen sample

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Cultures are held 3 weeks

Special Instructions: Indicate suspected viral agents on the request form. Call virology (20766) with queries concerning specific viruses or sources.

Specimen: Throat, rectal, CSF, nasal wash, tracheal aspirate, eye, biopsy, autopsy, blood

Container: Submit swabs in viral transport media. Submit urine, sputum, fluids, etc. in sterile containers. Collect blood (CMV) in EDTA (purple-top) tube. Collect blood in red top tube for Enterovirus

Critical Values: Positive CSF cultures
