Request Form: Microbiology

Collection: Collect random feces in a clean, leak-proof container.

Storage Instructions: Refrigerate

Causes for Rejection: Leaking container, improper source

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day, 7 days per week at the Microbiology Processing Laboratory, Room 5.137 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Preliminary report after 1 day, final report after 3-4 days

Special Instructions: If Yersinia pestis is suspected, notify the Microbiology Laboratory Director or Associate Director when ordering the culture so that proper safety precautions may be taken. Special media for the recovery of Yersinia spp. are not included as part of a routine stool culture and therefore Yersinia culture must be ordered separately.

Specimen: Feces, stool, rectal swab

Volume: 5 grams

Minimum Volume: 2 grams

Container: Clean, leak-proof container
