GASTROINTESTINAL (GI) BIOPSY (98305)

Lab: Surgical Pathology

Request Form: Surgical Pathology Laboratory Tissue Consultation (Requisition Form 86)

Collection: Gastrointestinal (GI)

Storage Instructions: See Special Instructions FIRST. Biopsies of the GI tract should be submitted in 10% neutral buffered formalin in a labeled with the patient's first and last names, unit history number, and specimen identification.

Causes For Rejection: Insufficient identification, incomplete request form, contaminated container.

Availability: Deliver to Surgical Pathology Laboratory, Room 2.186, John Sealy Annex, Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM-4:00 PM. After hours, specimens may be left in the refrigerator adjacent to the lab that opens to the corridor. Surgical Pathology personnel will pick up specimens twice in outpatient clinics Monday-Friday.

Turnaround Time: Routine-24hrs. STAT: Must be received in Surgical Pathology Laboratory by 12:00 noon for same day turnaround.

Special Instructions:

  • If lymphoma is suspected at endoscopy, additional biopsies should be taken, placed in a labeled container on Telfa pad moistened with saline, and brought immediately to Surgical Pathology for lymphoma protocol. Deliver directly to a technician or to a Surgical Pathology Fellow/Resident.
  • If microsporidial or exotic infection difficult to diagnose by light microscopy is suspected, additional biopsies should be fixed immediately in glutaraldehyde at 4°C., delivered at once to Surgical Pathology to be held for possible electron microscopy studies. Fixative may be obtained from Surgical Pathology Laboratory, Room 2.186, John Sealy Annex.
  • Request Form must include ICD-9 code, physician’s name, ID code, signature, clinical history and diagnosis.

Specimen: GI biopsy

Container: Pre-filled containers with 10% neutral buffered formalin are provided by the Surgical Pathology Laboratory, Room 2.186, John Sealy Annex. Also, containers of glutaraldehyde for electron microscopy may also be obtained.

How To Order: Submit GI biopsy specimen with proper form immediately to Surgical Pathology Laboratory, Room 2.186, John Sealy Annex.
