About Us

Who are we?

The UTMB Montgomery County Health Department (MCHD) is a team of individuals who work to promote health and healthy lifestyles for all residents of Montgomery County, Texas. We strive to represent all, regardless of economic or social status.

In 1990, Montgomery County contracted with the University of Texas Medical Branch - Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology to provide essential public health services formerly provided by the Montgomery County Health Unit.

The Health Unit then became part of the Regional Maternal and Child Health Program (RMCHP), a network of 39 UTMB clinics in Southeast Texas that serves over 82,000 women and children.

RMCHP's primary mission is finding new ways to provide care to underserved and special populations. RMCHP has two clinics in Montgomery County, in Conroe and in New Caney.

What do we do?

As a part of the RMCHP system, the UTMB Montgomery County Health Department in Conroe offers the following services:

  • Pre-pregnancy counseling and pregnancy testing
  • Prenatal care
  • Family planning services
  • Breast and cervical cancer screening
  • Dysplasia (abnormal tissue growth) evaluation and treatment
  • Well-child services
  • Women, Infants and Children (WIC) nutrition and education services
  • Financial eligibility screening, including Medicaid certification

As the county's lead public health agency UTMB Montgomery County Health Department in Conroe also coordinates disease surveillance and works with local hospitals to investigate and respond to disease outbreaks.

Among our newest and most exciting activities is public health preparedness and response. The Public Health Preparedness Program, funded by three grants from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, helps us prepare for and respond to public health emergencies that could be caused by anything from manmade bioterrorism attacks to disease outbreaks like Hepatitis A and Pandemic Influenza.

The Public Health Preparedness division of the UTMB Montgomery County Health Department works hand in hand with local government, hospitals, school districts local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to prepare for adverse events. We educate and prepare for the public by hosting forums, writing plans for all health and medical responses in Montgomery County and training Public Health Volunteers. We constantly train ourselves and participate in exercises that allow us to collaborate with and learn from county representatives, other public health departments and emergency management officials from throughout Texas.

We all hope that Montgomery County is never affected by an anthrax attack, a chemical spill or a pandemic influenza outbreak, but should such an incident occur, we are preparing now so we can respond seamlessly with other response entities throughout the county.
