Goals & Objectives
 GOALS 1.Give students the opportunity to observe the Kenyan health care system and the major diseases/medical conditions in Kenya. 2.Provide a framework for understanding the needs of and proper approach to working in international medical settings. 3.Introduce medical students to community-based health programs in Africa. OBJECTIVES Students will: 1.Cultivate cross-cultural communication skills; 2.Understand the importance and complexity of community-based public health programs in low-resource settings; 3.Gain experience in needs assessment and evaluation in the Kenyan health-care setting.

Description of course activities
 Students will work with Dr. Philip Keiser beginning at least 3 months prior to their trip to plan their elective. Planning will include selection of Kenyan site and preceptor, identification of any additional personal learning objectives, gathering and reading relevant background materials, and making travel arrangements. On site, students will work with selected Kenyan organizations to perform pre-determined projects that will be of benefit to the organization. Examples of projects include, but are not limited to, community surveys, assisting in community-wide de-worming campaigns, or performing needs assessments. Additionally, students will have an opportunity to shadow clinicians in hospital and/or clinic wards.

    Students will give a 5 minute power point presentation to other students and faculty participating in the electives. Presentation will be held on a single day after return from the elective and will cover the same format at the report.

    The students will be required to write a 1-2 page report covering the project or describing an interesing case. The format will be a general introduction, description of work accomplished or the specifics of the case, a summary that includes lessons learned and 3- 5 references from the literature. The report will be due one month after return from the elective.
