Production of Compounds

In addition to the production of these estrogen and testosterone-like compounds, the human body uses cholesterol to make many different compounds. Cortisol, necessary for life, is produced in the adrenal gland. Aldosterone is also produced, which is important in salt regulation.

There are two compounds in particular in the pathway to the production of testosterone and estradiol. These are DHEA and androstenedione. Androstenedoine is thought to enhance the body's natural testosterone production, thereby influencing muscle size and strength. There is some controversy associated with androstenedoine, since it is not regulated by the government and is readily available in health food stores.
