Galveston Galveston is a major city on a natural island located two miles off the coast of Texas in the Gulf of Mexico and less than 50 miles from downtown Houston. Galveston Island is bounded on the south by the Gulf of Mexico and separated from the mainland by an arm of Galveston Bay. It is some 30 miles long and from one to two miles wide. Three causeways and a ferry connect Galveston Island to the mainland.Galveston is home to two institutions of higher education, the University of Texas Medical Branch and Texas A&M Galveston. The population of the island community is approximately 80,000. Galveston has a long and colorful history. It has been inhabited by indians, pirates and many of the wealthiest merchants in the state of Texas. There are many recreational opportunities for those who enjoy water sports such as sailing, kayakking, and water skiing. The city of Galveston welcomes the many students who reside here during the course of their studies. There is always something interesting and fun to do on the island! | |||||
