Areas of Interest

For the past 10 years my main area of interest has been in the anatomical education of students from the Schools of Medical (SOM) and Allied Health Sciences (SAHS). I am the director/co-director of the Gross Anatomy & Radiology (GAR) course to first year SOM students, and to SAHS freshman taking Human Anatomy courses for Primary Care Professionals (Physician Assistants) and Rehabilitation Professionals (Physical Therapists). I also direct the gross anatomy component of the Prematriculation Reinforcement Enhancement Program (PREP) and Joint Admissions Medical Program (JAMP). I assist in teaching the Senior Selective in Anatomy which is directed by Dr. Brian Miller.  I am also involved in administrative activities associated with anatomical education, namely I am the Chief of the Division of Anatomy (DOA), Director of the Willed-body Program and of the Anatomical Laboratory Facility in Old Red.

Last year I was selected to the first class of the Academy of Master Teachers (AMT) at UTMB where I am now on the AMT Director’s Executive Committee and serve as leader for the Grants and Awards team. This team is responsible for awarding grant funds for educationally related travel, faculty development, educational research and curricular innovations. The inaugural class of Master Teachers has subsequently been given the title Distinguisher Teaching Professors by the board of Regents, and recently I was named the Dr. and Mrs.  Joseph T. Painter Distinguished Professorship in Teaching Excellence, an endowed position chosen by representatives from all four UTMB schools.  In 2008, the title of Distinguished Teaching Professor was bestowed upon Dr. Collins in recognition of his significant contributions to the educational mission of the Medical Branch.

My scholarly activities involve maintenance of the course websites for PREP/JAMP and SAHS courses. I also develop and assist in producing enduring educational materials such as computer-based practice exams, tutorials, and radiographic imagery material, and serving as a mentor/advisor for the development of a digital video dissector with Dr. Diane Chico as the principal investigator. Along with my DOA colleagues and others I am involved in the use of academic games as educational tools and help facilitate the integration of Pathology into the gross anatomy laboratories.
