Karen E. Smith is
a clinical psychologist who obtained her Ph.D. through the Medical
Psychology program at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.
She completed a pre-doctoral psychology internship at the Medical
University of South Carolina with an emphasis in Pediatric/Child
Psychology. Dr. Smith joined UTMB in 1986, in the Department of
Pediatrics and has recently become a faculty in the Department
of Neurology.
The change in departments was facilitated by
an interest in working with neurologists and neuroscientists in
better understanding the biological mechanisms by which children’s
development is effected. To this research interest, Dr. Smith brings
a long history of investigation of the biological and environmental
influences on children’s development. In collaboration with
Dr. Susan Landry, UT-Houston Health Science Center, Dr. Smith is
examining the development of children born very low birth weight
and how poverty and the parenting environment influence their development.
From this research an empirically tested parenting intervention
has been developed to assist parents in optimizing their children’s
development. In collaboration with neuroscientists and neurologists
in the UTMB Program Project, “Brain Cell Death Mechanisms
after Perinatal Ischemia”, Dr. Smith is currently developing
translational clinical studies to determine the impact of hypoxia
and hyperoxia on preterm children’s development.
In addition to her research, Dr. Smith is well
known for her clinical expertise in psychological assessment to
better understand and guide treatment for children with a variety
of learning and emotional disorders. This clinical expertise will
be utilized in collaboration with the pediatric neurologists in
clinical trials to investigate the effectiveness of drugs in treating
a wide variety of neurological disorders.
Research focuses on biological
and environmental influences in children’s development
and the application of basic science models to understanding
the impact of preterm birth on development.
