ADMISSIONS POLICY
 
  • General

    • Admission of students into the Neuroscience Graduate Program shall be contingent upon the person's qualifications and the availability of a position in the Program.

    • All admissions must conform to the requirements of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and the Basic Biomedical Science Curriculum and are subject to the approval of the Graduate Dean, but the Program may add additional requirements.

    • In order to be competitive for Graduate Assistantships, applicants should have their application form complete by mid-January and all supporting documentation submitted by mid-March for fall admission.

    • Ordinarily, new students are only permitted to matriculate in the fall term.  Students may be permitted to start “early” (in the summer term) before the beginning of the new academic year in the fall.

    • New applications will be reviewed and acted upon in a cooperative process between the Basic Biomedical Sciences Curriculum and the Neuroscience Graduate Program.. This procedure will not apply to M.D.-Ph.D. students who will be processed according to the admissions procedures of the M.D.-Ph.D. Program.

  • Specific Requirements

    • Official transcripts must be submitted as evidence of satisfactory completion by the time of admission of:

      • a baccalaureate degree at an accredited university or college

      • appropriate prerequisite coursework with a preferred overall grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and at least the same level for advanced coursework

      • completion of the prerequisite coursework, which includes:

        • Differential and Integral Calculus

        • General Physics (1 year)

        • General Chemistry (1 year)

        • Organic Chemistry (1 year)

        • Biology (1 year)

        • The applicant should have completed at least a year's work in advanced science courses pertinent to his/her proposed area of interest. Examples of possible areas for such advanced work include advanced biology, behavior, computer science, engineering, physical chemistry, and physiological psychology. It is strongly recommended that a course in biochemistry be taken before matriculation into the program.

    • Graduate Record Examination and TOEFL scores

      • Official GRE scores (general test) must be provided.  There is no minimum score required, nor is the GRE subject test required.

      • For applicants whose native language is not English, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required. A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test or 213 for the computer-based test is required for admission.

    • Letters of Reference
      Three letters of reference should be sent by individuals who can evaluate the personality traits, motivation, interest, academic capabilities, and, where appropriate, the research experience of the applicant.

    • Interview
      Applicants may be asked to come to Galveston for an interview.
