Double dose of sun can be fatal to sailors
Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 04/30/06
http://news.galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=bab6491884d4173d
Sailors get a double dose of sun — direct sunlight and sunlight reflected from the water, said Dr. Sharon Raimer, professor and chairman of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. “I think people need to do what they enjoy doing, but just do it with a bit of caution,” said Dr. Raimer. People who sail and who are careful can fare better than landlocked outdoors people, despite facing the sun’s dual threat. “Sailors who take precautions — using sunscreen and covering up — do seem better off than people who don’t pay much attention and get burned frequently,” she said.
