Thanks to a $10 million grant from the Economic Development Administration, UTMB plans significant renovation to the 1933 Customs House that suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Ike. Bob Brown, UTMB project manager, said the unique project is envisioned as a model of adaptive “reuse” of a historic building using the best preservation practices and modern energy-efficient design. “This is a great project that combines historical preservation with modern technology and use,” Brown said. “We’re blending the past and the future, and I can think of no better project than the Customs House, which means so much to the people and history of Galveston.”
