While the cancer incidence rate has not declined significantly, the cancer death rate has decreased. More people are surviving cancer, meaning primary care providers will have more patients living with cancer. Physicians have a crucial role in increasing survival rates as well as improving the quality of life for survivors, writes UTMB’s Dr. Sungmi Lian in a column on integrative medicine. Patients and physicians need to approach cancer as a chronic disease, with emphasis on risk reduction, prevention and lifestyle modifications.
