Unknown if UTMB Job Cuts Will Hit Local Clinic

KTRE-TV (ABC) Ch. 9 Lufkin TX (Internet / TV) 06/22/06 http://www.ktre.com/Global/story.asp?S=5067867&nav=2FH5 Operating losses are forcing the University of Texas Medical Branch to look for areas to cut one thousand jobs. It's too early to know if UTMB clinics in East Texas will be affected. One of thirty Regional Maternal/Child Health Centers in East and South Texas is in Nacogdoches. Everyday pregnant women and small children, most who are poor are treated by trained doctors and nurses. The service is significant, but it will still be subjected to close review. UTMB spokesperson Marsha Canright said, "Every aspect of the institution, and that includes all employees at all levels and all places, will be considered in this overall look of the institution and the services we currently provide." UTMB and Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital support the Regional Maternal/Child Health Center.  According to Canright the regional centers recently underwent close scrutiny.  Canright said, "The clinics are critically important to the institution, the people served and the State of Texas."  They should learn in early July how the cuts will affect the clinic.
