Why UTMB deserves support

Galveston County Daily News, January 15, 2011

Heber Taylor, editor of the paper, writes that UTMB Health is vital to people who live in Galveston County. With the legislature meeting, two economists were asked to calculate the benefits that UTMB Health has on the Texas economy. Ray Perryman, of The Perryman Group, and Robert Hodgin, of the University of Houston at Clear Lake, compiled a report that includes all kinds of interesting numbers. But perhaps the most interesting are these two:

·         $12.8 billion: The value of goods and services produced by physicians trained by the university.

·         169,201: the number of permanent jobs that exist in Texas because the university trained those physicians.
