Teen coordinates project to earn Scout badge

Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 03/07/06 http://news.galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=19f592771f8a751f Paul Galbraith celebrated his 18th birthday with the opening of a new nutrition center for The Jesse Tree. “This came together in just under five weeks,” said Ted Hanley, the organization’s executive director. “It was a challenge, but we pulled it off.” Galbraith, a member of Boy Scout Troop 124 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, had chosen the center as the service project for his Eagle Scout award. And, according to Scout rules, he had to complete the requirements for the award before reaching the age of 18. “He was literally working against the clock,” Hanley said. The center, dubbed the Apple a Day Café, is in what had been a vacant building next door to The Jesse Tree’s offices in the 2600 block of Market Street. “This project transformed an unusable space into a bright, welcoming, cafe atmosphere to house our nutrition programs,” Hanley said. Representatives of the Stark Diabetes Program, the American Heart Association and the Galveston County Health District joined in the ceremony to underscore the need for chronic disease management for those without health insurance.
