64th Meeting of the Environmental Health Sciences Core Centers
Disease First: A New Paradigm for Environmental Health Research

December 3-5, 2006
The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, TX
William C. Levin Hall

This year, the NIEHS Center in Environmental Toxicology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas is hosting the 64th Meeting of the Environmental Health Sciences Core Centers. The scientific symposium on Monday, December 4, 2006 will focus on environmental contributions to respiratory disease and cancer.

The “disease-first” philosophy in the environmental health sciences seeks to integrate environmental and medical research. Respiratory disease and cancer continue to be major human health burdens with a significant environmental component. Understanding chronic environmental exposures and the molecular mechanisms that lead to these disease states will provide the foundation for translational research aimed at therapeutic intervention. The symposium will present topics addressing the disease-first theme:

  • Recent mechanistic insights linking environmental stressors to respiratory disease and cancer.
  • Clinical research identifying how environmental exposures relate to disease etiology.
  • New tools and analytical methods to measure exposure and the subsequent biological response.
  • Community outreach and education as instruments for bridging the gap between science and human health as it pertains to the individual and the entire population.

A registration mixer begins at 4:00 P.M. on Sunday, December 3rd at the Moody Gardens Hotel. Dinner meetings begin that evening at 6:00 P.M. for each Center group; Directors, COEC Members, and Center Administrators. On Monday, December 4th, the scientific symposium for researchers and community outreach attendees will take place at the UTMB campus on the second floor of Levin Hall. The AANCP group will hold its meeting concurrently on the 3rd floor. On Tuesday, December 5th at the Moody Gardens Hotel, the entire group is welcome to breakfast and the COEC meeting begins and continues to mid-afternoon.

A unique aspect of this year’s meeting will be Monday evening’s meeting at the Lone Star Flight Museum. Discuss environmental health science, form new collaborations and enjoy fine dining by local chefs surrounded by one of the foremost collections of restored, vintage aircraft in the nation. Docents will be present for small group tours following the meeting.
