Camp Counselor/Kim Duong I had a great time at Camp RAD. !

Working with all counselors and campers made me feel wonderful! Even though I went home icky and sweaty every day of camp, I always looked forward to another day of seeing those wonderful and unique smiles of each and every camper. I felt very rewarded when I saw a camper smiling at me or running up to me and giving me a hug. Camp RAD was a very unique and rewarding experience and I think it will be hard to find another experience like it.

Camp Counselor/Ellen Blackburn It was great to see the kids’ confidence increase as they learned how to control their asthma.

It was as much a learning experience for the counselors as the kids!

Camp Counselor/Helen Eichblatt A nursing student perspective:

Taking Ways of Knowing at the same time as Camp really enhanced the learning process for nursing research. Had I not been learning about nursing research at the same time, I know I would not have understood why and how we did things. Watching the whole process of camp made the research aspect come alive.

A nurse’s perspective:

Visiting with the campers and their families on home visits, being their counselor and teaching the daily asthma lessons was an opportunity to get to know each camper very well. Watching these campers take the knowledge they have learned about managing their asthma and incorporate it into their daily lives is very rewarding. Every nurse wants to make a difference. Having the opportunity to see these campers at a later date, to learn from them that they have had a good year managing their asthma makes all the hard work worthwhile.

I highly recommend anyone who enjoys being with children and is interested in improving the well-being of children with asthma to join Camp RAD. Participating in camp allow me to gain experience in educating and working with children of various ages. I was able to work in collaboration with other health care providers such as doctors, respiratory therapists, and child life specialists. I found great satisfaction in knowing I was able to help improve the quality of life for these children and their families.
