Lungs

About Asthma
Asthma is a lung disease that will never go away (chronic illness). It cannot be cured, but it can be controlled, and it may improve with time on its own.

• Airways (breathing tubes) are inflamed, and airway linings are irritated.
• Airways can get smaller making breathing difficult. This can get better (but not completely in some patients), either by itself or with treatment.
• Airways are sensitive. They may react to many things, such as; cigarette smoke, pollen, or cold air. When this causes coughing, wheezing, tightness in the chest, and difficult breathing, we call it an asthma episode.
