About Asthma
Asthma is a lung disease that will never go away (chronic illness). It
cannot be cured, but it can be controlled, and it may improve with time on its own.
Airways (breathing tubes) are
inflamed, and airway linings are irritated.
Airways can get smaller making breathing difficult. This can get better (but
not completely in some patients), either by itself or with treatment.
Airways are sensitive. They may react to many things, such as; cigarette
smoke, pollen, or cold air. When this causes coughing, wheezing,
tightness in the chest, and difficult breathing, we call it an asthma episode.
