Description of Institutions The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston The University of Texas Medical Branch Hospitals are John Sealy Hospital; Children's Hospital; John Sealy Annex; Jennie Sealy Hospital; Rebecca Sealy Hospital; R. Waverley Smith Pavilion; Mary Moody Northern Pavilion; Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Hospital, operated jointly by TDCJ and UTMB. Shiners Burns Hospital, operated by the Shiners of North America, is a UTMB-affiliated center.
The University of Texas Medical Branch operates 928 hospital beds of which 414 are in John Sealy Hospital. There were 36,229 admissions to UTMB in 1997 and 797,846 outpatient visits. There were 88,378 additional emergency room visits.
The Department of Obstetrics
and Gynecology The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is composed of five divisions: Education, Gynecology (General gynecology, Urogyn, and Pediatric Gyn), Gynecology Oncology, Maternal Fetal Medicine and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. The clinical coverage includes Residents’ OB and GYN clinics, Ultrasound clinic, Women’s Health clinic (Victoria), Primary Care Pavilion (private practice) and 19 Regional Maternal Children Health Program Clinics throughout southeast Texas. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has total of 650 employees.
During Dr. Garland. Anderson’s tenure as Chairman, the department has consistently ranked among the top 20 in National Institutes of Health research funding, and most recently was ranked fourth in the nation.
